Boing Boing: Reactionary school-boards’ block-buy eliminates sex from text-books

I’m the oldest of 5 kids (counting myself), so how are kids are getting their education is something I find increasingly important as I become older and start thinking about kids of my own.

To be honest, this story sickens me, and I can’t help but wonder if one day my son or daughter will come up to me and ask “Daddy, what’s this tolerance thing I’m learning about in History class? And why did they make it go away? They won’t really say why without dodging the quesiton.”

Make no mistake, teaching sex education completely from an “abstinence-only” standpoint stems from religion and nowhere else. Abstinence has its merits and I’m sure a lot of kids grow up with such an awkward adolescence that it’s probably the best bet until they find someone they’ll spend the rest of their lives with.

For whatever reason it seems like the current generation in power always seems to think that the upcoming generations are more capable of avoiding the same mistakes in life they had made. Even more ironically, our mastery over the elements, adaptation skills, and our technology has effectively shut-down our evolutionary process yet we continue to think that we are advancing at a phenomenal rate.

Let’s be honest: A society which manages to successfully convert a pack of hormone factories into friendly absintant school kids can only take place in a society MUCH more improved than ours, which is at the very least a few thousand years away.
