Tom’s Hardware Guide Columns: SP2 And The Damage Done

I’ve debated installing Windows XP SP-2 for a long time, mostly because it fixed several problems with wireless support and security (screw the pop-up blocker in IE, FireFox works fine thanks). I installed it on a couple laptops while fixing them up for friends and family and was immediately struck by how the startup process seemed to take twice as long compared to before the install.

My wife, who has much more computer experience than your average person but isn’t exactly a tech, even noticed when she booted up her laptop for the first time after SP-2 was installed.

The link above will take you to a Tom’s Hardware article on the many issues with SP-2, and why a lot of admins are choosing not to install it on their machines.
