Merry Christmas From The U.S. Senate: Patriot Act Renewal Rejected

To paraphrase Boing Boing’s post, yes Virginia there is a Santa Clause. In this case he isn’t one jolly old man with rosy cheeks or a bowl full of jelly gut. This year he’s about 100 people who shake when they laugh like a bowl full of booze.

The U.S. Senate rejected extensions of major provisions of the Patriot Act today in a 52-47 vote. Bill Frist, charming fellow that he is, demonstrated whole-heartedly to the U.S. public that you really shouldn’t vote the way you feel as he changed his vote at the last minute to the nay-sayers. He realized they were going to win (and here’s the kicker) so he changed his vote because it gives him the ability to call for a new vote at any time.

So much for voting with your beliefs. Clearly bullshit political maneuvering takes priority over anything even resembling a moral stance.
