This post at the loose wire blog showed up in my RSS feeds today, and one quick read was enough to make me consider pulling the plug on my facebook account.
Two major points: Your data and your friends’ data can be used by the third parties that made the facebook apps you install. I’ve done some support for some of the people who develop these applications and that thought doesn’t exactly thrill me.
Here’s the second major item that really bothered me, regarding the handling of private data (and more importantly your friends’ data):
Our data is vulnerable to the weakest link in the chain, which will be a friend we’ve given full access to who installs every third party app there is.
We all know plenty of those…
I’ve never really put out a call for comments on anything before, but I know there’s a fair amount of you who read this site that also use facebook. Please read through it and let me know what you think.
Having tried a lot of the alternative video players available for OS X 10.5 right now, VLC has become my favorite choice.
This mostly has to due with flexibility and the fact that it supports the Apple remote. Up until now I defaulted to NicePlayer (which also supports the remote but only under 10.4).
The only problem with VLC is the application icon which is about as smooth as a car wreck in the dock. MacRabbit has a very nice replacement icon set which also supports file types.
Happy new year everybody! We spent last night and the day so far at home, making a lot of good food and working on our waistlines. The holidays wiped us out to the point where we didn’t even entertain the idea of doing anything for New Year’s Eve.
And now, enjoy this extremely low level Blue Angel fly by in San Francisco.
