Might be time to dump Facebook

January 23rd, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

This post at the loose wire blog showed up in my RSS feeds today, and one quick read was enough to make me consider pulling the plug on my facebook account.

Two major points: Your data and your friends’ data can be used by the third parties that made the facebook apps you install. I’ve done some support for some of the people who develop these applications and that thought doesn’t exactly thrill me.

Here’s the second major item that really bothered me, regarding the handling of private data (and more importantly your friends’ data):

Our data is vulnerable to the weakest link in the chain, which will be a friend we’ve given full access to who installs every third party app there is.

We all know plenty of those…

I’ve never really put out a call for comments on anything before, but I know there’s a fair amount of you who read this site that also use facebook. Please read through it and let me know what you think.

I’ve been thinking about deleting my Facebook account since I never use it any way. I’m not really comfortable with so many companies having so much personal data either, that includes Facebook and Google along with many other sites. Some of them are so ridiculous you can’t even post a comment without registering.
